Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, The Hangover Part III stars Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, Ken Jeong, John Goodman, Melissa McCarthy and Heather Graham.
While the movie steps away from the subject matter of its successful predecessors (it doesn’t revolve around a bachelor party or a wedding), The Hangover Part III also unfortunately steps away from the comedy that made the previous movies so successful.
Where The Hangover and The Hangover Part II utilised what I would call extreme shock comedy combined with the odd charm of Zach Galifianakis, The Hangover Part III utilises what I would call an unnecessarily large amount of violence towards animals combined with the angry stares of Ken Jeong.
The movie centres around Zach Galifianakis’ character, Alan, his erratic behaviour after the death of his father, and the criminal and manipulative exploits of Ken Jeong’s character, Mr. Chow. Although both of these characters were once the humorous sidekicks that many have come to love, the screenplay lacked the ability and humour to adequately make the most of these characters (and talented actors) when brought to the forefront.
What is worth sitting through the movie for, however, is the scene that takes place halfway through the credits. The movie would have perhaps succeeded if it had begun with this scene and then worked its way backwards. Overall, I give The Hangover Part III a 2 out of 5.
